GEODE Spring Webinar
We are happy to announce that our Spring Seminar will take place next 31 May 2022!
The panel discussion will be an afternoon session (from 14:00 to 16:00) and will take place remotely, while all our speakers will be in Brussels.
NAVIGATING THROUGH THE STORM. LOCAL ENERGY DISTRIBUTORS: A CRUCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN A TRANSFORMING ENERGY SYSTEM
The surge in energy prices Europe is experiencing since late 2021 and the crisis in Ukraine are leading to a radical shift in EU’s approach on energy policy. In this challenging context, the EU is forced to find short-term solutions to tackle the surge in prices while developing a longer-term strategy to reduce fossil fuels’ dependence from Russia. Further complexity is given by the fact that EU legislators are currently working on the most ambitious decarbonization package ever presented – the so called Fit for 55 – and a complete overhaul of the gas regulatory framework to promote the development of clean gases such as
hydrogen and biomethane (the Gas Package). The latter is particularly controversial at this time as the role of gas – and of molecules in general – in the EU energy mix is increasingly questioned. Price is the key concern in this regard, and the Commission – based on a report ACER will soon publish – is already working on a revision of the electricity market design to also tackle the negative price effect gas is having on electricity bills. While the situation is extremely fluid and evolving rapidly, it is essential to take stock of the recent developments in the EU energy policy landscape and exchange on the impact this
situation has on energy actors across Europe. This is particularly relevant for local energy
distributors members of GEODE.
In light of this context, GEODE is organizing a seminar bringing together experts from EU institutions, academia and industry to explore how local energy distributors can go through the current energy crisis and thrive in a future decarbonized energy system.
